Shigeru Sakurai is a Japanese professional wrestler and mixed martial artist. He is best known for his work in the Japanese promotion New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). He is a former IWGP Heavyweight Champion, IWGP Tag Team Champion, and GHC Heavyweight Champion. Sakurai was born in Ibaraki, Japan, on 29 June 1979. He began training in professional wrestling in 1998, and made his debut in 2000. He quickly rose to prominence in NJPW, winning the IWGP Heavyweight Championship in 2003. He held the title for over a year, before losing it to Hiroshi Tanahashi in 2004. Sakurai has also competed in mixed martial arts, making his debut in 2006. He has fought for promotions such as DEEP, Pancrase, and Rizin Fighting Federation. He has a professional record of 15 wins and 11 losses. Sakurai is married to professional wrestler and mixed martial artist, Ayako Hamada. They have two children together.
