Shirishkumar Mehta was born on 28 December, 1926 in Nandurbar, Maharashtra, India. He was the son of a farmer and was educated at the local school. He went on to study at the University of Bombay, where he earned a degree in economics. Shirishkumar Mehta began his career as a journalist, working for the Times of India and the Indian Express. He then moved into politics, becoming a member of the Indian National Congress. He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1967 and served as a minister in the government of Indira Gandhi. Shirishkumar Mehta was a strong advocate for social justice and was a vocal critic of the caste system. He was also a proponent of economic liberalization and was a key figure in the liberalization of the Indian economy in the 1990s. Shirishkumar Mehta was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian award, in 1998. He passed away in 2004 at the age of 77.
