Sidney Thornton is an American former professional football running back who played in the National Football League (NFL) for the New Orleans Saints from 1976 to 1979. He was born on September 2, 1954 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Thornton attended the University of Southern Mississippi, where he was a standout running back. He was drafted by the Saints in the fourth round of the 1976 NFL Draft. He played in all 16 games as a rookie, rushing for 545 yards and four touchdowns. He was the Saints' leading rusher in 1977 and 1978, and was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1978. Thornton's career was cut short due to a knee injury suffered in 1979. He finished his career with 2,717 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns. After his playing career, Thornton worked as a coach at the high school and college levels. He is currently the running backs coach at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. As of 2021, Sidney Thornton's net worth is estimated to be roughly $1 million.
