Silvina Ocampo was an Argentine writer, poet, and short story writer. She was born in Buenos Aires on July 28, 1903, to a wealthy family. She was the youngest of six children. Her father was a lawyer and her mother was a pianist. Silvina Ocampo was educated at home by private tutors and was an avid reader from a young age. She was also an accomplished pianist and painter. She began writing poetry and short stories in her teens and published her first book of poetry, "Canciones de la Muerte," in 1925. Silvina Ocampo was a prolific writer, publishing over twenty books of poetry, short stories, and novels. She was a member of the Argentine avant-garde literary movement, the "Generación del '45," and was a close friend of Jorge Luis Borges. She was also a member of the Argentine Academy of Letters. Silvina Ocampo died in Buenos Aires on December 14, 1993. She was 90 years old.
