He went on to play for several other clubs in the Netherlands, including PSV Eindhoven, FC Utrecht, and Feyenoord. He also had a brief stint in the United States with the Los Angeles Aztecs. Mertens made his debut for the Dutch national team in 1954 and went on to make a total of 24 appearances for the team. He was part of the Dutch team that reached the final of the 1974 FIFA World Cup. Mertens retired from professional football in 1978 and went on to become a coach. He coached several clubs in the Netherlands, including FC Utrecht, Feyenoord, and PSV Eindhoven.
