Sonny Richards is an American musician, songwriter, and producer. He is best known for his work with the band The Allman Brothers Band, which he co-founded in 1969. He has also released several solo albums and collaborated with other artists. Richards was born in Kadoka, South Dakota, and grew up in Florida. He began playing guitar at the age of 12 and soon joined a local band. He moved to Macon, Georgia in 1969 and formed The Allman Brothers Band with Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, and Berry Oakley. The band released their debut album in 1971 and went on to become one of the most influential bands in the history of rock music. Richards left the band in 1972 and released his first solo album, Laid Back, in 1973. He has since released several more solo albums and collaborated with other artists, including Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, and Willie Nelson. Richards is currently living in Nashville, Tennessee. He worked with the police department until 1980 when he took early retirement due to health problems.

In the 1980s he was employed as the Title VII Bilingual Education Program home liaison officer with the Rapid City Area Schools. He served as a cultural adviser and linguist. During this time he also was an adviser to the Wicokini Dance Troupe.
