Sriniwas Tiwari was born on 17 September, 1926 in Shahpur, Kingdom of Rewa. He was the son of a freedom fighter and a social worker. He was educated at the Government High School in Rewa and later at the Government College in Jabalpur. Sriniwas Tiwari started his political career in the 1950s when he joined the Indian National Congress. He was elected to the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1957 and served as a minister in the state government from 1957 to 1967. He was also elected to the Lok Sabha in 1967 and served as a Member of Parliament until 1977. Sriniwas Tiwari was a prominent leader of the Indian National Congress and was known for his strong commitment to social justice and the upliftment of the poor and downtrodden. He was also a strong advocate of the rights of the tribal people and was instrumental in the formation of the Tribal Development Corporation in Madhya Pradesh. Sriniwas Tiwari was also a noted philanthropist and was involved in various social welfare activities. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1975 for his contribution to public service. Sriniwas Tiwari passed away on 28 April, 2018 at the age of 92.

He also served as a member of the Vindhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly between 1952 and 1956, before it was merged into Madhya Pradesh. He was bitterly opposed to the merger and advocated the separation of Vindhya Pradesh region from Madhya Pradesh during his political career. He was known as the White Tiger of Madhya Pradesh.

He was a six-time member of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly. For most of his political career, he was a member of the Indian National Congress, and had stints in Socialist Party and Samyukta Socialist Party in his younger days.
