Steve Wing is a 68-year-old American university professor and activist. He was born in 1952 in the United States. He is best known for his work in environmental justice and public health. Wing earned his bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1975 and his master's degree in sociology from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1977. He then went on to earn his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1983. Wing is currently a professor of epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is also the director of the UNC Center for Environmental Health and Susceptibility. He has conducted research on the health effects of environmental exposures, including air pollution, hazardous waste, and industrial chemicals. Wing has been involved in numerous environmental justice campaigns, including the fight against the Atlantic Coast Pipeline and the fight against the proposed Titan Cement plant in Castle Hayne, North Carolina. He has also been involved in campaigns to protect the Cape Fear River from industrial pollution. Wing has received numerous awards for his work, including the Environmental Justice Award from the Environmental Protection Agency in 2004 and the Environmental Leadership Award from the North Carolina Environmental Justice Network in 2006. Wing is married and has two children. He currently resides in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
