Sue Kaufman was an American novelist and short story writer. She was born in New York City on August 7, 1926. She attended the University of Michigan and graduated in 1948. Kaufman is best known for her novel The Diary of a Mad Housewife, which was adapted into a 1970 film starring Carrie Snodgress. She also wrote the novel Good Times, Bad Times, which was adapted into a 1983 film starring Jeff Bridges. Kaufman wrote several other novels, including The Joys of Teaching, The Best of Everything, and A Certain Age. She also wrote short stories for The New Yorker, Harper's, and other magazines. Kaufman was married to the writer and editor Robert Gottlieb from 1954 until his death in 2019. She died on April 28, 1975, at the age of 48. Kaufman's net worth is unknown.

Kaufman was born in Long Island, New York. She received her degree from Vassar College in 1947. In 1953, she married a doctor named Jeremiah Abraham Barondess, with whom she had a son. At Vassar, she did some editorial work. Her works appeared in The Atlantic Monthly, The Paris Review, and The Saturday Evening Post. Her first novel came out in 1959. In 1967, she wrote Diary of a Mad Housewife, which was adapted as a movie in 1970. She died in Manhattan in 1977 at the age of 50 after a long illness. The Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction is named in her honor.
