Susan Napier is a New Zealand novelist and short story writer. She was born on 14 February 1954 in Auckland, New Zealand. She is the daughter of a doctor and a nurse. She attended the University of Auckland, where she studied English and French. Napier has written several novels, including The House of the White Elephant (1984), The House of the Red Fish (1986), and The House of the Black Swan (1989). She has also written several short stories, which have been published in various magazines and anthologies. Napier has won several awards for her writing, including the New Zealand Book Award for Fiction in 1984 and the Montana New Zealand Book Award in 1989. She has also been a finalist for the Commonwealth Writers' Prize in 1989 and the Miles Franklin Award in 1990. Napier currently lives in Auckland, New Zealand, with her husband and two children. She is currently working on her fourth novel.
