Svend Asmussen is a Danish jazz violinist and singer who has had a long and distinguished career. He is considered one of the greatest jazz violinists of all time and has been playing professionally since the 1930s. He has performed with some of the greatest jazz musicians of all time, including Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, and Stephane Grappelli. He has also recorded extensively as a solo artist and with his own groups. Asmussen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, and began playing the violin at the age of five. He was inspired by the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli, and soon began performing in local jazz clubs. He was soon playing with some of the top jazz musicians in Europe, including clarinetist Benny Goodman and pianist Duke Ellington. Asmussen has released over 50 albums as a leader or co-leader, and has appeared on hundreds of recordings as a sideman. He has also composed and arranged music for films, television, and the stage. He has been awarded numerous honors, including the Danish Music Award for Lifetime Achievement in Jazz, and the Order of the Dannebrog. He continues to perform and record, and is considered one of the greatest living jazz violinists.
