Smith began her career as a backing vocalist for artists such as Chaka Khan, Lalah Hathaway, and Meshell Ndegeocello. She released her debut album, Psykosoul, in 2001. The album was critically acclaimed and spawned the hit single "Sometimes a Rose Will Grow in Concrete". Smith has released four additional albums, including her most recent, Fast and Curious, in 2018. She has also appeared in films such as The Preacher's Wife and The Fighting Temptations. In November 2011, Smith began touring with Sheila E. and the E Family. In December 2011, Smith announced her fourth album, Fast and Curious to be released on March 6, 2012.
