Sydney Pollack was an American film director, producer, actor, and entrepreneur. He was best known for directing films such as Tootsie (1982), Out of Africa (1985), and The Firm (1993). He was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning two for his work on Out of Africa. Pollack was born in Lafayette, Indiana, on July 1, 1934. He attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he studied theater and graduated in 1956. He then moved to New York City, where he worked as an actor and director in theater and television. In 1965, Pollack made his feature film debut as a director with the drama The Slender Thread. He went on to direct a number of successful films, including They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969), The Way We Were (1973), Three Days of the Condor (1975), and Tootsie (1982). He also produced a number of films, including The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989) and The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999). Pollack was married to Claire Griswold from 1958 until his death in 2008. He had three children, Rebecca, Rachel, and Steven. At the time of his death, Pollack had an estimated net worth of $50 million.

The film The Electric Horseman (1979) was his last scope (2.35 AR) film for a long period. Pollack switched to shooting full frame (soft matte) with a 1.85 intended AR. This was driven by the fear of what damage home video did to widescreen movies with pan-and-scan transfers. His last movie The Interpreter (2005) was shot in scope.

He brought a lawsuit against Danish TV after screening Three Days of the Condor (1975) in pan-and-scan in 1991. (April 1997) The court ruled that the pan scanning conducted by Danish television was a 'mutilation' of the film Three Days of the Condor (1975) and a violation of Pollacks 'Droit Moral', his legal right as an artist to maintain his reputation by protecting the integrity of his work.
