Syed Ahmad Shahabuddin was born into a prominent family of Syeds in Kulim, Kedah. He was educated at the Sultan Abdul Hamid College in Alor Setar, Kedah and later at the Sultan Idris Training College in Tanjung Malim, Perak. He then went on to study at the University of Malaya in Singapore, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Political Science. Syed Ahmad Shahabuddin began his political career in the 1950s, when he joined the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO). He was elected to the Kedah State Legislative Assembly in 1959 and served as the state's Chief Minister from 1961 to 1964. He was also a member of the Federal Parliament from 1964 to 1969. Syed Ahmad Shahabuddin was appointed as the Minister of Education in 1969 and served in that position until 1974. He was also the Minister of Home Affairs from 1974 to 1978. He was appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister in 1978 and served in that position until 1981. Syed Ahmad Shahabuddin was a strong advocate of Malay rights and was instrumental in the formation of the New Economic Policy (NEP) in 1971. He was also a strong supporter of the Malay language and was responsible for the introduction of the Malay language as the national language of Malaysia. Syed Ahmad Shahabuddin passed away on 28 April, 2008 at the age of 83.
