T. S. Thakur is an Indian jurist who served as the 43rd Chief Justice of India from December 2015 to January 2017. He was born on 4 January 1952 in Ramban, Jammu and Kashmir. He completed his schooling from Government High School, Ramban and graduated from Government College, Jammu. He then went on to pursue his law degree from the University of Jammu and Kashmir. Thakur began his career as a lawyer in Jammu and Kashmir High Court in 1977. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court in 1994 and was made a permanent Judge in 1999. He was then appointed as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2008. In 2009, he was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India. Thakur was appointed as the 43rd Chief Justice of India on 3 December 2015 and retired on 3 January 2017. During his tenure, he was known for his progressive views on human rights and gender equality. He was also instrumental in the passage of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015. Thakur is married to Uma Thakur and has two sons. He is currently 72 years old.
