Tahar Ben Jelloun is a Moroccan novelist, poet, and essayist. He is best known for his novels The Sacred Night (1987) and This Blinding Absence of Light (2001), which won the Prix Goncourt. He has also written several plays, short stories, and essays. He has been awarded numerous prizes, including the Prix Goncourt, the Prix Médicis, and the Prix Femina. He is a member of the Académie Goncourt and the Académie française. Ben Jelloun was born in Fez, Morocco, in 1944. He studied philosophy at the University of Mohammed V in Rabat and later worked as a journalist for the Moroccan newspaper Le Matin du Sahara. In 1971, he moved to France, where he worked as a journalist for the French newspaper Le Monde. Ben Jelloun has written more than twenty books, including novels, poetry, and essays. His works have been translated into more than twenty languages. He has won numerous awards, including the Prix Goncourt, the Prix Médicis, and the Prix Femina.
