Tamaz Kostava is a Georgian politician and former Prime Minister of Georgia. He was born in Kutaisi, Georgia, and graduated from the Tbilisi State University in 1979 with a degree in economics. He then went on to work in various positions in the Georgian government, including as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy. Kostava was appointed Prime Minister of Georgia in 1995, and served until 1998. During his tenure, he oversaw the implementation of a number of economic reforms, including the introduction of a new currency, the lari. He also worked to improve relations with Russia, and to strengthen ties with the European Union. Kostava is currently a member of the Georgian Parliament, and is the leader of the opposition party, the United National Movement. He is also a member of the Georgian Academy of Sciences.
