Tarık Galip Somer is a Turkish politician who served as the President of Turkey from 1989 to 1993. He was born on October 15, 1926 in Develi, Kayseri Province, Turkey. He studied law at Ankara University and graduated in 1950. Somer began his political career in the 1950s, when he was elected to the Turkish Parliament in 1957. He served as the Minister of Justice from 1965 to 1969 and as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1969 to 1971. He was also the Prime Minister of Turkey from 1971 to 1972. In 1989, Somer was elected as the President of Turkey, becoming the first president to be elected by popular vote. During his presidency, he focused on improving the economy and strengthening the country's ties with the European Union. He also worked to improve the rights of women and minorities. Somer left office in 1993 and retired from politics. He is currently 91 years old and is living in Istanbul. He is married to his wife, Gülten Somer, and has two children.
