Terence Todman is a former United States diplomat who served as the United States Ambassador to Denmark, Spain, Argentina, and Chile. He was born on March 13, 1926 in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. Todman attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1948. He then attended the University of Maryland School of Law, where he earned a Juris Doctor degree in 1951. Todman began his diplomatic career in 1951, when he joined the United States Foreign Service. He served in various posts in the United States Department of State, including as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs from 1969 to 1973. In 1973, Todman was appointed United States Ambassador to Denmark, a post he held until 1976. He then served as United States Ambassador to Spain from 1976 to 1979, and United States Ambassador to Argentina from 1979 to 1981. In 1981, he was appointed United States Ambassador to Chile, a post he held until 1983. Todman retired from the Foreign Service in 1983 and returned to the United States. He has since served on the boards of several organizations, including the National Endowment for Democracy, the Inter-American Dialogue, and the Council of the Americas. Todman is 88 years old. Todman graduated from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico summa cum laude, and earned an M.P.A. degree from the Maxwell Graduate School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University, which is the top-ranked and most prestigious graduate school of public administration. During his Ambassadorship in Guinea, his embassy was under eavesdropping of the Soviet Union's KGB. His appointment as ambassador to Costa Rica in 1974 represented the first African American to be given the title in a Spanish-speaking country.
