Thad Jones was an American jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader. He is best known for his work with the Count Basie Orchestra, the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, and his own big band, the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. He was also a prolific composer, writing over 200 compositions. Jones was born in Pontiac, Michigan, and began playing trumpet at the age of nine. He studied at Cass Technical High School in Detroit, and later at Wayne State University. He began his professional career in the early 1940s, playing with various bands in the Detroit area. In 1952, Jones joined the Count Basie Orchestra, and remained with the band until 1963. During this time, he wrote many of the band's arrangements, including "April in Paris" and "Corner Pocket". He also wrote arrangements for other bands, including the Duke Ellington Orchestra and the Woody Herman Orchestra. In 1966, Jones and drummer Mel Lewis formed the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra, which became one of the most influential big bands of the era. The band released several albums, and toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe. In 1978, Jones left the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra to form his own big band, the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra.
