Thomas Blamey was an Australian soldier and field marshal who served as the Chief of the General Staff, the professional head of the Australian Army, from 1936 to 1940 and again from 1950 to 1951. He was the only Australian to attain the rank of field marshal. Blamey was born in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, on 24 January 1884. He was educated at Wagga Wagga Public School and the New South Wales Military College. He joined the Australian Army in 1903 and served in the Boer War and World War I. He was promoted to the rank of major general in 1929 and was appointed Chief of the General Staff in 1936. Blamey served in World War II as Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Land Forces in the South West Pacific Area. He was responsible for the planning and execution of the campaigns in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. He was promoted to the rank of field marshal in 1950 and retired from the army in 1951. Blamey was a controversial figure in Australian military history. He was criticised for his handling of the Kokoda campaign and for his role in the dismissal of General Sir John Lavarack in 1941. He was also accused of being too close to the Australian Labor Party and of having a poor relationship with the Australian government. Blamey died in 1951 in Melbourne, Victoria. He was awarded the Order of the British Empire and the Order of Australia for his service to the Australian Army.
