Thomas Holtz is an American paleontologist and professor at the University of Maryland. He is best known for his work on theropod dinosaurs, particularly the origin and early evolution of birds. He has written several books on the subject, including Dinosaurs: The Most Complete, Up-to-Date Encyclopedia for Dinosaur Lovers of All Ages and The Complete Dinosaur. Holtz was born in Los Angeles, California, and grew up in the San Fernando Valley. He received his B.A. in geology from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1987, and his Ph.D. in geology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1992. Holtz is currently a professor in the Department of Geology at the University of Maryland, College Park.
