He was a pitcher and outfielder for the Birmingham Black Barons, the Memphis Red Sox, and the Kansas City Monarchs. James was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and attended Parker High School. He was signed by the Birmingham Black Barons in 1945 and made his debut in the Negro Leagues that same year. He played for the Black Barons until 1948, when he was traded to the Memphis Red Sox. He played for the Red Sox until 1951, when he was traded to the Kansas City Monarchs. He played for the Monarchs until 1952, when he retired from professional baseball. James was known for his strong arm and his ability to hit for power. He was also known for his speed and agility on the base paths. James was married to his wife, Mary, for over 50 years. He had two children, Thomas Jr. and Mary Ann. James passed away on April 15, 2021, at the age of 98. He was survived by his wife, two children, and four grandchildren. At the time of his death, James had an estimated net worth of $1 million. He earned most of his wealth through his career in professional baseball.
