Thomas W. Blackburn was born in Raton, New Mexico, on June 23, 1913. He attended the University of New Mexico, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1935. He then went on to earn a Master of Arts degree in English from the University of Colorado in 1937. Blackburn began his career as a teacher and lecturer at the University of New Mexico in 1937. He then moved to the University of Colorado, where he taught English and served as the head of the English department from 1941 to 1945. In 1945, Blackburn moved to the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor of English until his retirement in 1978. During his time at Berkeley, he wrote several books, including The Waste Land: An Interpretation (1948), The Waste Land: A Critical Study (1951), and The Waste Land: A Critical Edition (1955). Blackburn was also a prolific poet, publishing several collections of poetry, including The Waste Land: A Poem (1951), The Waste Land: A Poem in Three Parts (1953), and The Waste Land: A Poem in Four Parts (1955). Blackburn was awarded the National Book Award for Poetry in 1955 for his collection The Waste Land: A Poem in Four Parts. He was also awarded the Bollingen Prize for Poetry in 1956. Blackburn passed away on April 15, 2002, at the age of 88.
