In the early 1980s, he formed the band Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine with Jim Bob. The band released several albums and singles, and had several hits in the UK. Carter has released several solo albums, including his debut, The Last Cowboy (1995), and his most recent, The Way I See It (2018). He has also produced albums for other artists, including Thea Gilmore and The Divine Comedy. Carter is married to singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Sarah Siskind. They have two children.
