He is a two-time Olympic medalist, having won a bronze medal in the men's quadruple sculls at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, and a silver medal in the men's quadruple sculls at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Maeyens began rowing at the age of 15, and has since become one of the most successful rowers in Belgian history. He has won numerous medals at the World Rowing Championships, including gold medals in the men's quadruple sculls in 2005 and 2006, and a bronze medal in the men's quadruple sculls in 2007.
