Tino Sanandaji is a Swedish-Iranian economist and entrepreneur. He is the founder of the think tank Nordic Innovation Institute and the author of several books on economics and public policy. He is also a research fellow at the Institute for Economic Research at the Stockholm School of Economics. Sanandaji was born in Tehran, Iran, in 1980. He moved to Sweden with his family at the age of nine. He studied economics at the Stockholm School of Economics, where he received his PhD in 2009. Sanandaji has written several books on economics and public policy, including SuperEntrepreneurs: How the Best of the Best are Transforming the World (2016), The Nordic Secret: How Scandinavia Became the Most Innovative, Entrepreneurial and Prosperous Region in the World (2018), and The Nordic Model: How to Create a Competitive Economy and a Fair Society (2020). Sanandaji is a frequent commentator on economic and public policy issues in the Swedish and international media. He is a regular contributor to the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter and the Swedish radio program Ekot. He has also appeared on the BBC, CNN, and CNBC.

2014

Sanandaji is a vocal critic of Sweden's policy on immigration of low-educated migrants from third world countries, but also of supporters of the anti-immigration party Sweden Democrats. He approaches the issue from an internal perspective, as both an immigrant himself and a former resident of various areas of social deprivation. According to Sanandaji, he has not conducted basic research on immigration but instead refers to research and statistics collected by other researchers. As of 2014, he describes his profession as economic research and writing on immigration as an unpaid hobby.

2004

Sanandaji has authored four books. His first two books were coauthored with Magnus Henrekson: Owner taxation and entrepreneurship - on tax theory and the Swedish policy debate (SNS Press, 2004) and Institutional Entrepreneurship (Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd., 2012). He then coauthored SuperEntrepreneurs - and how your country can get them (the Centre for Policy Studies, 2014) with his brother Nima Sanandaji. In February 2017, he self-published the book Massutmaning ("Mass Challenge") on Swedish immigration and integration policy. The book reached the top slot of many best-seller lists. In November 2017 his upcoming book on Swedish fiscal policy met its funding goal on Kickstarter.

Sanandaji arrived in Sweden in 1989 with his family as a 9-year-old and grew up in Norrköping and Ale Municipality. He earned a MSc in Economics and Business Administration from Stockholm School of Economics in 2003 and a PhD from the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago in 2011. His PhD dissertation is entitled Essays in Entrepreneurship Policy.
