Tito Puente was a Grammy Award-winning musician, composer, and bandleader who was known as the "King of the Mambo" and the "King of Latin Jazz." He was born Ernest Anthony Puente Jr. on April 20, 1923, in New York City. Puente was a master of the timbales, a set of two small drums, and he was a pioneer in the development of Latin jazz. He released more than 100 albums and won five Grammy Awards. Puente also composed music for films and television shows, and he appeared in several films. He died on May 31, 2000, in New York City.

His son Richard "Richie" Puente (died 2004 of complications following an assault) was a member of the musical group Foxy, which had a major disco song in 1978 with "Get Off" (Dash 5046). The song spent two weeks at #1 on Billboard's R&B charts and went to #9 on the Hot 100 pop charts.
