Tom Kruse was born in Waterloo, Australia, on 28 August 1914. He was the son of Esmond Gerald Kruse and his wife, Mary. He was raised in a rural area and attended school in the nearby town of Clare. At the age of 18, Tom Kruse began working as a mail carrier, delivering mail to remote areas of the Outback. He worked as a mail carrier for over 50 years, travelling over 10,000 miles a year. During his career, he became known as the "Mailman of the Outback". In the 1950s, Tom Kruse was featured in a documentary film, The Back of Beyond, which won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. The film followed Kruse as he delivered mail to remote areas of the Outback. In the 1960s, Tom Kruse was featured in a feature film, The Back of Beyond, which was based on his life as a mail carrier. The film was a success and was nominated for several awards. Tom Kruse retired from his mail carrier job in the late 1960s. He then moved to the town of Birdsville, where he ran a small business. He died in Birdsville in 2009, at the age of 94. Tom Kruse's net worth is estimated to be around $1 million.
