Tom Shales is an American television critic, author, and Emmy Award-winning writer. He is best known for his work as a television critic for The Washington Post from 1977 to 2010. He has also written for Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, and The New York Times. Shales was born in Elgin, Illinois, and attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he earned a degree in journalism. After college, he worked as a reporter for the Elgin Courier-News and then as a copy editor for the Chicago Sun-Times. In 1977, Shales was hired by The Washington Post to be its television critic. He held the position for 33 years, until his retirement in 2010. During his tenure, he won the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 1988. Shales has also written several books, including Live From New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live, which he co-authored with fellow television critic James Andrew Miller. Shales is 77 years old. He has an estimated net worth of $2 million.
