Tommy Douglas was a Canadian politician and Baptist minister who served as the seventh premier of Saskatchewan from 1944 to 1961 and leader of the federal New Democratic Party from 1961 to 1971. He is widely credited as the father of Canada's universal health care system. Born in Falkirk, Scotland, Douglas immigrated to Canada with his family in 1910. He began his career as a Baptist minister in Saskatchewan, and was elected to the provincial legislature in 1934. He was elected leader of the Saskatchewan Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) in 1942, and led the party to victory in the 1944 provincial election. He was re-elected in 1948, 1952, and 1956. Douglas resigned as premier in 1961 to become leader of the federal New Democratic Party (NDP). He led the party to its first electoral success in the 1962 federal election, and was re-elected in 1965 and 1968. He resigned as leader in 1971, and retired from politics in 1979. Tommy Douglas died on February 24, 1986, at the age of 81. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Canada in 1986, and was voted "The Greatest Canadian" in a 2004 CBC Television program.
