Toni Cade Bambara was an American author, documentary filmmaker, social activist, and college professor. She wrote short stories, essays, and novels, and was best known for her short story collection Gorilla, My Love. She was also a founding member of the Black Arts Movement. Bambara was born in New York City in 1939. She attended Queens College and City College of New York, where she earned a bachelor's degree in English. She then went on to earn a master's degree in American Studies from City College. Bambara's writing career began in the 1960s, when she wrote short stories for magazines such as Essence and The New Yorker. Her first collection of short stories, Gorilla, My Love, was published in 1972. She also wrote two novels, The Salt Eaters (1980) and Those Bones Are Not My Child (1999). Bambara was also an activist and a college professor. She taught at several universities, including Rutgers University, the University of California, Berkeley, and Spelman College. She was also a founding member of the Black Arts Movement, a group of African-American writers, artists, and activists who sought to create a new form of black art and literature. Bambara died in 1995 at the age of 56. She was posthumously inducted into the Georgia Writers Hall of Fame in 2000.
