He is best known for writing the song "The Dance" which was recorded by Garth Brooks and won the 1990 Country Music Association Song of the Year award. Arata began his career as a songwriter in the late 1970s, and his songs have been recorded by a variety of artists, including Brooks & Dunn, Trisha Yearwood, and Reba McEntire. He has also released several albums of his own material, including his debut album, Tony Arata, in 1989. Arata has won numerous awards for his songwriting, including the Academy of Country Music Song of the Year award for "The Dance" in 1990, and the Nashville Songwriters Association International Song of the Year award for "The Dance" in 1991. He has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards. Arata currently lives in Nashville, Tennessee, and continues to write and record music. He is married and has two children.
