Tristan Bernard was a French playwright, novelist, journalist, and actor. He was born on 7 September 1866 in Besançon, Doubs, France. He was the son of Paul Bernard, a lawyer, and his wife, Louise-Adélaïde. He studied law in Paris and was admitted to the bar in 1889. Tristan Bernard began his career as a journalist, writing for the satirical weekly Le Courrier français. He wrote his first play, Les Pieds Nickelés, in 1894. It was a great success and was followed by a series of other plays, including La Paix chez soi (1896), Le Dindon (1897), and La Petite Dame de la Gare (1902). Tristan Bernard also wrote novels, including Le Petit Chose (1902) and Le Bonhomme de Chemin (1905). He also wrote several books of essays, including Les Contes du Lundi (1909) and Les Contes du Dimanche (1910). Tristan Bernard was also an actor, appearing in several films, including La Paix chez soi (1909) and Le Dindon (1910). He was also a member of the French Academy, and was awarded the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor in 1921. Tristan Bernard died on 5 December 1947 in Paris, France. He was 81 years old.
