Truman Capote was an American novelist, short story writer, playwright, and screenwriter. He is best known for his novella Breakfast at Tiffany's (1958) and his true crime novel In Cold Blood (1966). He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and raised in Monroeville, Alabama. He attended the University of Alabama and New York University. Capote's writing career began in the 1940s, when he wrote short stories for magazines such as The New Yorker and Harper's Bazaar. His first novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms (1948), was a critical and commercial success. He followed this with Breakfast at Tiffany's (1958), which was adapted into a popular film starring Audrey Hepburn. In 1966, Capote published In Cold Blood, a true crime novel about the murder of a Kansas family. The book was a bestseller and won Capote the Edgar Award for Best Fact Crime. He also wrote the screenplay for the film adaptation of the novel. Capote's later works include the novel Answered Prayers (1986) and the play The Grass Harp (1951). He died in 1984 at the age of 59. At the time of his death, Capote's net worth was estimated to be around $10 million.
