Uday Shankar was an Indian dancer, choreographer, and director of the classical and modern dance. He was the first Indian to experiment with modern dance in India. He was born in Udaipur, Rajasthan, India, to a Bengali family. He was the youngest of seven siblings. Uday Shankar was trained in Indian classical dance forms such as Kathak and Manipuri, and also in ballet and folk dance. He was the first Indian to perform in the West, and he toured Europe and the United States in the 1920s and 1930s. He was also the first Indian to establish a dance school in India, the Uday Shankar India Culture Centre in Almora, Uttarakhand. Uday Shankar was also an actor and director. He acted in several films, including Kalpana (1948), Kalpana (1949), and Kalpana (1952). He also directed the film Kalpana (1948). Uday Shankar was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1956 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1958. He died on 26 September 1977 in Kolkata, India.
