Van Alexander was a prolific composer, arranger, and conductor of popular music. He was best known for his work with the big bands of the 1940s and 1950s, including those of Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, and Artie Shaw. He also wrote and arranged for films, television, and Broadway shows. Alexander was born in New York City on May 2, 1915. He began playing the piano at the age of five and was soon performing in local clubs. He attended the Juilliard School of Music and graduated in 1934. Alexander began his career as a staff arranger for the Benny Goodman Orchestra in 1935. He wrote and arranged many of Goodman's hits, including "Sing, Sing, Sing" and "Let's Dance." He also wrote and arranged for other big bands, including those of Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, and Harry James. Alexander wrote and arranged for films, television, and Broadway shows. He wrote the music for the Broadway musicals "High Button Shoes" and "The Pajama Game." He also wrote the music for the films "The Benny Goodman Story" and "The Glenn Miller Story." Alexander was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1983. He died in Los Angeles on July 19, 2015, at the age of 100.
