Vera Brittain was an English writer, feminist, and pacifist. She is best known for her 1933 memoir Testament of Youth, which chronicles her experiences during World War I and her journey to becoming a writer. Brittain was born in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, England, UK on December 29, 1893. She was the daughter of a solicitor and a nurse. She attended Somerville College, Oxford, where she studied English literature and history. In 1914, Brittain enlisted in the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) and served as a nurse in London, Malta, and France. Her experiences during the war inspired her to write Testament of Youth, which was published in 1933. The book was a bestseller and was adapted into a film in 2014. Brittain was a prominent feminist and pacifist. She was a founding member of the Peace Pledge Union and the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. She was also a vocal advocate for women's rights and was a member of the National Union of Societies for Equal Citizenship. Brittain died on March 29, 1970 in London, England. She was 76 years old.
