She is best known for her success in the 400m sprint, having won the gold medal at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane. Burnard began her career as a sprinter in the late 1970s, competing in the 400m and 800m events. She won the 400m gold medal at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, and also competed in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Burnard retired from competitive athletics in 1985, and has since become a successful coach. She has coached numerous athletes to success, including Olympic gold medalist Cathy Freeman.
