He attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a degree in English literature. After college, he worked as a technical writer and editor for a number of Silicon Valley companies. Koman's first novel, Kings of the High Frontier, was published in 1996. It won the Prometheus Award for Best Novel in 1997. He has since written several other novels, including The Jehovah Contract, Solomon's Knife, and The Unincorporated Man.
