Vilmos Zsigmond is a Hungarian-American cinematographer who has worked on over 100 films. He is best known for his work on Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), The Deer Hunter (1978), and The River (1984). He has been nominated for four Academy Awards and won one for his work on The Deer Hunter. Zsigmond was born in Szeged, Hungary in 1930. He studied at the Academy of Drama and Film in Budapest and began his career as a cinematographer in Hungary in the 1950s. He immigrated to the United States in 1956 and worked on a number of low-budget films before being hired by director Robert Altman to shoot his first major Hollywood film, McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971). Zsigmond has since worked on a number of critically acclaimed films, including Deliverance (1972), The Long Goodbye (1973), The Sugarland Express (1974), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977), The Deer Hunter (1978), Heaven's Gate (1980), and The River (1984). He has also worked on a number of television shows, including The X-Files (1993-2002), Carnivàle (2003-2005), and The Pacific (2010). Zsigmond has been nominated for four Academy Awards and won one for his work on The Deer Hunter. He has also won a number of other awards, including the American Society of Cinematographers Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003.
