Vincent Harding is an American historian, author, and civil rights activist. He is best known for his work on the civil rights movement and his close association with Martin Luther King Jr. Harding was born in New York City and attended the City College of New York. He later earned a master's degree in history from the University of Chicago and a doctorate in history from the University of Pennsylvania. Harding was a professor at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, from 1960 to 1968. During this time, he was a close associate of Martin Luther King Jr. and was involved in the civil rights movement. He was a member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and was a key figure in the planning of the March on Washington in 1963. Harding was also a professor at the Iliff School of Theology in Denver, Colorado, from 1968 to 1976. During this time, he wrote several books on the civil rights movement, including There Is a River: The Black Struggle for Freedom in America (1981). Harding has also served as a visiting professor at several universities, including Stanford University, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Colorado.
