Walter Bishop was a Jamaican-born American jazz pianist and composer. He was a major figure in the development of bebop and modern jazz. He was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and moved to the United States in the 1920s. He began his career as a pianist in the early 1930s, playing with the likes of Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, and Don Redman. He was a member of the Charlie Parker Quintet in the 1940s, and he also worked with Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Thelonious Monk. Bishop was a prolific composer, writing over 200 compositions, including "Blue Bossa," "Soul Eyes," and "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise." He also wrote the music for the Broadway musicals "The Wiz" and "Ain't Misbehavin'." Bishop died in 1998 at the age of 93. He was inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame in 1997.
