Walter Matthews was an English actor who had a long and successful career in the theatre, film, and television. He was born on 22 September 1881 in Camberwell, London, England, UK. He was educated at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Matthews began his career in the theatre, appearing in a number of plays in the West End of London. He made his film debut in the silent film The Great Adventure in 1915. He went on to appear in a number of films throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including The Lodger (1927), The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933), and The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934). In the 1940s, Matthews began to appear in television programmes, including the BBC's Sunday Night Theatre and ITV's Armchair Theatre. He also appeared in a number of films, including The Man in Grey (1943), The Wicked Lady (1945), and The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956). Matthews was married twice, first to actress Mary Glynne in 1910, and then to actress Mary Merrall in 1945. He had two children from his first marriage. Matthews died on 28 April 1965 in London, England, UK. He was 83 years old.
