Walter Zakaluzny was a Polish-born Canadian soldier who served in the Canadian Army during World War II. He was born in Przemyśl, Poland, on 2 May 1925. He was the son of a Ukrainian father and a Polish mother. At the age of 17, Walter joined the Polish Army and fought in the Polish-Soviet War of 1939. After the war, he was taken prisoner by the Soviets and sent to a labour camp in Siberia. He managed to escape and eventually made his way to Canada in 1947. In Canada, Walter joined the Canadian Army and served in the Korean War. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal for his service. After the war, he worked as a machinist and later as a tool and die maker. Walter Zakaluzny passed away on 15 April 2021 at the age of 98. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and four grandchildren.
