He was born on December 25, 1978 in Beijing, China. Wang Wei began his professional career in the CPBL in 2001, playing for the China Stars. He was then traded to the Guangdong Leopards in 2004, where he has remained ever since. He has been a consistent performer for the Leopards, and has been named to the CPBL All-Star team multiple times. Wang Wei is a right-handed pitcher who throws a fastball, slider, and changeup. He has a career record of 81-68 with a 3.90 ERA and 1,072 strikeouts in 1,541 innings pitched. He has also been a reliable hitter, batting .269 with a .717 OPS in 1,072 plate appearances. Wang Wei is married and has two children. He is currently 45 years old.

He holds the distinction of having hit the first home run ever in the World Baseball Classic, when China played eventual champion Japan in the first round. On June 20, 2007, he signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners of Major League Baseball.
