Wilcomb E. Washburn is an American historian and professor emeritus at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was born in 1925 in New York City. He received his B.A. from Harvard University in 1947 and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1954. Washburn is best known for his work on the history of Native Americans, particularly the history of the American West. He has written numerous books on the subject, including The Indian in American History (1960), The American Indian and the Problem of History (1987), and Red Man's Land/White Man's Law: The Past and Present Status of the American Indian (1971). He has also written extensively on the history of the American West, including The American West: A New Interpretive History (2000). Washburn has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the National Humanities Medal in 2000 and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society for Ethnohistory in 2006. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences. Washburn is currently retired and lives in Santa Barbara, California. He is married and has two children.
