Wilhelm Pieck was a German politician and the first president of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). He was born in Guben, Germany, on 3 January 1876. He was a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and a founding member of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). Pieck was a leader of the German labor movement and a prominent figure in the German Revolution of 1918–1919. He was a member of the Weimar National Assembly and the Prussian Landtag. He was also a member of the Reichstag from 1920 to 1933. Pieck was arrested by the Gestapo in 1933 and spent the next twelve years in Nazi concentration camps. After the war, he was a leader of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) and was elected as the first president of the GDR in 1949. He held the office until his death in 1960. Pieck was a committed Marxist-Leninist and a strong advocate of the Soviet Union. He was awarded the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. He is remembered as a symbol of the GDR and a champion of German reunification.
