Wilhelm Voigt was a German actor and impostor who became famous for impersonating a Prussian military officer in 1906. He was born on 13 February 1849 in Tilsit, East Prussia, Prussia (now Sovetsk, Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia). He was the son of a shoemaker. At the age of 16, Voigt joined the Prussian Army and served for three years. After his military service, he worked as a shoemaker and a locksmith. In 1876, he moved to Berlin and began working as an actor. He appeared in several plays and films, but his career was not successful. In 1906, Voigt decided to impersonate a Prussian military officer in order to rob a Berlin bank. He was successful in his plan and managed to steal 4,000 marks. He was arrested shortly after and sentenced to four years in prison. After his release from prison, Voigt returned to acting and appeared in several films. He died on 5 October 1922 in Berlin.
