Will Roscoe is an American activist and author who has been involved in the LGBT rights movement since the 1970s. He is best known for his work on the history of same-sex relationships in Native American cultures. Roscoe was born in Seattle, Washington, and grew up in the nearby town of Bellevue. He attended the University of Washington, where he earned a bachelor's degree in anthropology in 1977. He then went on to earn a master's degree in anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1981. Roscoe has been involved in the LGBT rights movement since the 1970s. He was a founding member of the Gay Academic Union, and was a member of the San Francisco Lesbian and Gay History Project. He has also been involved in the fight for LGBT rights in Native American communities, and has written extensively on the history of same-sex relationships in Native American cultures. Roscoe is the author of several books, including The Zuni Man-Woman (1991), Changing Ones: Third and Fourth Genders in Native North America (1998), and Queer Spirits: A Gay Men's Myth Book (1995). He has also written numerous articles and essays on LGBT rights and Native American history. Roscoe is currently a professor of anthropology at San Francisco State University. He is also a board member of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).
